HOLY: OpenAI says its *unreleased* Astra model (GPT6?) produced ten advances on long-standing open problems across mathematics, quantum complexity and theoretical computer science. Among them: – The first explicit non-sofic group – Connes’s rigidity conjecture disproved – Quantum parallel repetition proved for general two-player entangled games – Ehrhart’s volume conjecture proved – The first improved general sphere-packing exponent since 1978 OpenAI says the core arguments were generated by Astra. The model then formalized the proofs in Lean, producing machine-checkable certificates alongside a 249-page manuscript. The successful solution runs would cost only roughly $2,000 in tokens at Sol API rates. Scientific reasoning is becoming a genuine model capability much much faster than most people expected. I am so freaking hyped. Breakthroughs every day. The day before yesterday, an 80% price cut for Terra and Luna; yesterday, the DeepSeek 4 flash release with insane evaluations and prices. Today, more breakthroughs with an unreleased model. I love it! OpenAI is on such a great run!

The GPT-6 series has been revealed by @OpenAI, codenamed "Astra" OpenAI just dropped a major update: an internal version of Astra, their next major model, has produced ten significant new results in mathematics and theoretical computer science. These are problems that had seen no real progress on their core questions for at least a decade. Highlights include: - New upper bounds on high-dimensional sphere packing - Construction of non-sofic groups - Disproof of Connes’s rigidity conjecture - Superexponential lower bounds for multicolor Ramsey numbers - Hardness results for the closest vector problem in lattice cryptography Humans prepared the manuscripts with the model. Astra formalized the arguments in Lean. OpenAI is releasing the Lean certificates plus narrations of the model’s reasoning process. Total estimated token cost for all ten solutions: about $2,000 at current Sol API rates. This is the first public glimpse of Astra in action. OpenAI has not confirmed whether it will ship as GPT-6 or as a new tier in the existing lineup, but the company is clearly positioning it as their next major model, focused on long-running multi-agent work on hard problems.

A very smart friend recently argued to me that it's actually bad that OpenAI paused training on the model that hacked HuggingFace (or at least bad that they disclosed that fact), because it's now in the training data for future models, which will encourage deceptive alignment.

openai is preparing its next major model family reportedly, Sam Altman gave policymakers a demo of the unreleased "Astra" model this week oai hasn't decided whether to call it GPT-6 or GPT-5.7, but i guess they will keep the Sol, Terra, and Luna names, while Astra becomes its big mythos-tier model
