Eye Implant That Restores Vision to the Blind Cleared for Sale | Frank Landymore Contributing Writer, Futurism An eye implant that can help blind people see again is poised to hit the market — in Europe, at least. On Wednesday, the US-based Science Corporation announced that it had received approval from the European Union to treat patients with its vision-restoring bionic eye device, called Prima, in a huge step towards the commercialization of the technology. “We have a cochlear implant for vision now,” CEO Max Hodak told Stat News. Science Corp’s device is designed to treat advanced macular degeneration, a condition in the eye which causes central vision loss. It’s the leading cause of vision loss in older adults, with severe forms of it accounting for nearly 90 percent of legal blindness in the US, according to one estimate. To restore vision, the Prima device uses a wireless chip that’s surgically implanted under the retina. This connects with a pair of camera-equipped glasses, which transmits video in the form of near-infrared light that the chip turns into electrical signals interpreted by the brain. Science Corp first published the results of a preliminary clinical trial in late 2024, showing that patients who used the device were able to recognize faces again, and even read books. “One of our patients in France finished a 300-page novel a little while ago, and sent us the book,” Hodak recently told TechCrunch. “We have a sketch on the wall [that] one of our patients drew of the Sydney Opera House. There are videos of patients playing crossword puzzles and filling in Sudoku.” But Hodak — who cofounded Neuralink with Elon Musk before leaving to start Science Corp — was candid that his tech still has a lot of room for improvement. “This is an early version. It’s kind of like looking through a straw in the centre of their vision,” he told the Financial Times, saying it was “powerful proof” that the company was on the right track. “We see in the future how to get to colour pretty close to native acuity,” he added. Each Prima device is expected to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, but Science Corp says it’s working with healthcare providers to cover some of the cost, per TechCrunch. It’s most likely to first start treating patients in Germany, where it conducted its clinical trials. It’s not the only company making moves in this space. Neuralink just shared that participants living with paralysis are now controlling a powered wheelchair using nothing but their thoughts. No joystick. Just intention. Next up Neuralink will likely connect these individuals to an Optimus robot where they get complete independence, effectively telepresense – seeing and hearing, and ambulating through a robot. Noland Arbaugh just described a cursor that moved before he decided to move it. The first paralyzed man to receive a Neuralink now says nobody with working hands can keep up with him. Arbaugh: “When I’m attempting to do stuff sometimes, or I’m thinking it to move in a certain place, sometimes it’s so good that it’s moving before I even think it to move.” Before he thinks it. Not faster than his hand. Faster than knowing he wanted to move it. Arbaugh: “It’s almost like if you think about moving your hand, the signal’s basically already being sent before you move your hand.” Your brain commits to a movement before you know you’ve decided. Neuroscience has been documenting this for decades. The intention forms, the signal fires, and awareness arrives late. You have never experienced the moment you decide anything. You experience the notification that a decision was already made. You are not the one deciding. You are the one who finds out. Neuralink reads the signal at its source. Before the delay. Before the awareness. Before the body gets a say. Arbaugh: “So the speed that all of that happens, and it’s almost a little preemptive, I saw that with the Neuralink where it was moving the cursor before I was actually moving my hand.” Every human who has ever lived was slower than their own intention. The signal leaves the brain, runs the spinal cord, reaches the muscle, and the muscle contracts. Milliseconds burned pushing thought through meat. That latency was never a flaw in your thinking. It was the toll for routing a thought through a body. It was also the only room you ever had to change your mind. Arbaugh: “With video games, stuff like that, you just need to think for it to move somewhere, and it is that accurate.” The device isn’t restoring what he lost. It’s removing a bottleneck the rest of us aren’t allowed to touch yet. Arbaugh: “It’s quicker than you can even think, so there’s no way anyone else is going to be able to keep up with it.” A man who cannot move his hands just explained why he’ll outperform everyone who can. Not through effort. Through architecture. The rest of us still run signals through nerve tissue at a speed evolution set hundreds of millions of years ago and never revisited. Every limit we call human turns out to be a limit of the wiring, not the mind underneath it. Every thought in human history had to pass through a body before it could touch the world. Every word spoken. Every line written. Every idea that ever reached another person. Every word you have ever said to someone you love arrived late. His didn’t. Neuralink didn’t give him a new ability. It deleted the distance between wanting and doing. That distance is the only thing that ever stood between a thought and the world.
